Parks & Recreation

It is the mission of the Walworth Parks and Recreation Department to provide diverse year-round leisure activities and facilities to our community that promote citizen involvement and a strong sense of community while striving to increase the social, cultural, and physical well-being of our residents. It is our goal to constantly improve our existing programs and parks for the enjoyment of our citizens.
Please Note:  Due to continued acts of vandalism to the athletic fields at Sherburne Road Park the park gates will now be locked at 3:30pm Monday-Friday and will remain locked throughout the weekend (Saturday & Sunday) until further notice.  Gates will be opened by park staff on weekdays (Mon-Fri) in the morning.  In the Spring we plan to move the current park gates back closer to the athletic fields to prevent any acts of vandalism while still allowing parking and access to the Red Trail Head in the northernmost area of the park.  Until that time, however, gates will be on the new lock schedule to prevent further damage to the athletic fields in the park.  We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience as we know the trail is used heavily throughout the year.  Please contact the Recreation Department with any questions or concerns.

What’s New?

Can you believe Spring is just around the corner?  It seems like we were just celebrating the season with Light the Night!  How time flies!

Speaking of Light the Night, we’d like to again extend our gratitude to the community for their outpouring of support for the event. Between the number of businesses and organizations that decorated trees (15 of them!) and all of those who came out for an evening of holiday fun it was a fantastic evening that we look forward to repeating next year. Keep those tree decorating ideas flowing!

We’ve recently had a number of Eagle Project’s completed in the park. Next time you’re in Ginegaw Park you’ll notice two new footbridges for the soccer fields (no more jumping over the wet slop!) and a beautiful new Ginegaw Farm Market sign at the entrance to the market. We thank our local Eagle’s for their time and efforts in completing the projects for us. They’re a wonderful addition to our park!

Have you been to the new Rink at Ginegaw Park? Skating is back in Walworth! While it took some time for the weather to get cold enough for our ice to freeze we’ve now established a great surface for skating. We’d be remiss to not thank the Spring 2015 Town TopicsWalworth Friends of the Park for their efforts in helping the rink become a reality. Through their willingness to donate time to organize and carryout fundraisers and generously donating money to help fund the rink it took a dream of ours and made it a community reality. We can’t thank you enough!

We also need to give a quick thank you to Randy LaBarge for his insight and efforts in maintaining the rink. We didn’t exactly know what to expect when we first put the boards up but thankfully Randy is an expert with outdoor rinks and has ours in top shape. Between resurfacing the ice, keeping a watchful eye over the rink, and opening the rink for special evening skates, we can’t thank Randy enough for his time this winter!

We had another very busy year in the department. Our leagues and partnerships with local travel organizations continue to grow. We’ve established an incredible relationship with the Gananda Bandits, taken Babe Ruth Baseball under our wing, and continue to look to provide the best experiences possible for our young community athletes. Thank you to all who volunteered their time this past year to coach, assistant coach, or referee as we can’t do any of what we do without you! We thrive because of your dedication and willingness to work with the kids.

For being a “small” department we have lofty goals and aspirations for what we look to provide for the community. Much of that falls on the shoulders of those behind the scenes who you don’t see (or don’t realize just how much they do!). Without our amazing Parks staff (who think we’re a little crazy but never fail to back us in everything we do!) we couldn’t accomplish what we look to nor could we provide the beautiful park space and athletic fields we’re so lucky to have. Next time you’re in the park or at an event let the guys know you appreciate their hard work as much as we do!

As you browse through our Spring program offerings please help us out by registering for programs early. Often times programs are canceled or significantly impacted even though interest is there due to the low number of registered participants at cut-off dates. We don’t know you’re interested in participating unless you register – so please register early (and often!) for programs to ensure the best experience possible for all participants and to avoid the disappointment of a program being canceled or rescheduled for a later date.

We look forward to seeing you all this Spring! Thanks for your continued support!
